Save the Newick LevellerIn the 20th century Newick was famed for its soft-fruit growing, particularly strawberries and gooseberries. The Leveller variety of gooseberry was the star, as the fruit grew exceptionally large. It was proudly marketed as the "Newick Leveller". By the 1980s the Newick soft-fruit growing industry had waned but the Village Society started a campaign in 2007 to encourage residents to start growing the Newick Leveller again in their gardens. Annual competitions have successfully been held in the community centre in July, with entries for a single Leveller, a group of six Levellers, a punnet of Levellers, together with other categories for any variety of gooseberry (pot of jam, most delicious dessert etc).
